SCOTLAND’S economy continues to lag behind the UK, notching up GDP growth of just 0.2 per cent in the first quarter, new Scottish Executive figures reveal.
A dramatic fall in production within the electricity, gas and water supply sector - down 13.3 per cent - and a slump in construction output thwarted progress, although the service sector made steady gains. (for more information click here)

T WOULD appear to be the perfect site for a family home. Close to Edinburgh but minutes from the beach and with good schools and services nearby.
But despite the massive demand for such homes in Scotland, Pinkie Mains remains undeveloped. The area of land, in Musselburgh, East Lothian, has been bogged down in the bureaucracy of Scotland’s planning process since the late 1970s.
House builders and campaigners last night said the site was a classic example of why reform of the planning process in Scotland was urgently required.
The calls for change came as Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, revealed three bills to address a similar problem in England. (for more information click here)

HOUSE price inflation in west central Scotland is showing no sign of slowdown, much like the “more desirable” areas on the other side of the country, despite four increases in interest rates since last August and the prospect of more to come.
According to the latest GSPC quarterly house price report, compiled with Glasgow University, annual property price inflation in the region is now running at more than 11 per cent, almost three times the rate of growth a year ago. (for more information click here)
