Many people around the world seem fond of the Swedish welfare system. As a DJ on XM Radio, Bob Dylan chose the theme “rich and poor” for one of his new shows. After playing a number of songs on class differences in the United States, Dylan said: “In Sweden, they have a system of higher taxes but welfare for everyone. They call it the Swedish model. Well, I could go for a Swedish model right about now.”

CNN) — So, there’s been an election in Sweden?
There has indeed. The Scandinavian country — an EU member and proud possessor of one of the world’s most advanced welfare systems — went to the polls on Sunday. While numerous parties contested the election, the key battle was between the incumbent center-left Social Democrat party, headed by Goran Persson — who has been Prime Minister since March 1996 — and a center-right coalition, the Alliance for Sweden, headed by Frederick Reinfeldt, leader of the Moderate Party.

After 12 long years in opposition, an alliance of four non-Socialist political parties unseated Göran Persson’s Social Democratic government last September. Headed by the youthful Fredrik Reinfeldt, who leads the alliance’s foremost party, the Conservative Moderate Coalition Party, which also achieved its greatest success to date.

Until 1976, the Parliament had 350 members. This even number turned out to be problematic. In the Parliament election of 1973, the left and the right bloc received 175 seats each. This led to that many decisions had to be made by lottery. From 1976 onwards, the Parliament has 349 members. In 1994, the electoral period was extended from three to four years.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden–(BUSINESS WIRE)—-Swedish Match (STO:SWMA) has on July 6, 2007 reached an agreement to sell its real estate company which is the owner of two buildings belonging to the Tobaksmonopolet property in Stockholm. Swedish Match will remain as one of the tenants in the divested buildings.
